This is the most expensive car I've ever bought

Is the MG ZS180 one of the greatest cars from the MG Rover era?

I have always been a MG Rover man, and I reckon I've bought one of the best cars to have ever come out of Longbridge

Hearing a YouTuber say that he's bought his most expensive car ever, you'd probably expect it to be some six-figure, 800bhp supercar financed to the hilt.

Sorry to disappoint, I bought an MG Rover. But it is quite a special one.

I've always been enticed by the MG 'Zed' cars. I wanted my first car to be a ZR, but due to crazy insurance costs, I went for a Rover 25 and immediately set about putting on the ZR bits on it.

My dream Zed car is a Trophy Yellow ZR160, MG's hot hatch pocket rocket; three-door of course.

I've been patiently waiting for that specific car to come along for the right price, but then another Zed car stunner came along that forced my hand.

A 2004 Monogram Glacier MG ZS180. It was one of those situations where I mentioned to the owner "If you ever sell it, give me a shout".

He never was going to sell it. But then suddenly he did want to sell it. So I bought it. For £4,500.

I have only ever bought cars for £1,500, maximum. So this ZS has been a quantum shift in my financial recklessness.

There were only five ZS180s finished in Monogram Glacier, what any normal person would call sparkly white. Two of them went abroad (so who knows whether they're still about these days), one was written-off in a crash and one is up in Scotland, very much off the road due to having enormous rust holes here, there and everywhere.

That means, as far as I'm aware, EJ04 XVV is the only Monogram Glacier ZS180 on the road, in the world. Kind of cool.

The reason it has cost so much is that it's a bit of a minter. The previous owner thoroughly looked after it, so I've finally not bought a car that visibly needs restoring. It's not perfect – the paint has chipped near where some of the trim pieces connect to the main body of the car – but forgiving it those bits, it's a low mileage, ferociously rare performance saloon car.

I've already taken it to my favourite place in the world – the Isle of Arran – and I can see this car slotting in with my Mondeo ST200 has a forever car in my garage. I'm sure you'll see it dipping in and out of DriveTribe content very soon.

On another note, does anyone have a cheap MG ZR160 three-door in Trophy Yellow that they'd like to sell?
